Description

This was my final for my landscape drawing class: AKA Intermediate Drawing 2. The project was to portray a scene from the Grenada Undersea Sculptures Garden located in Cancun. For this piece I have decided to challenge myself and do it in ink pen and water color. I did not want to convey water by constantly using the color blue. I decided to have fun with color theory and do high intensity colors in the foreground and the become cooler as they eye goes into the back of the canvas.

During Critique, my professor absolutely love it but as high level as this is of a painting there is always something to consider. I have been looking though the collection of references and it was rather difficult to convey that this is underwater without drawing in bubbles or putting in fish. I thought about painting out a fish in the image, but to be honest I thought that would really take away from all that is happening within the piece.

Nonetheless, I love this piece! This is the crown jewel of all of the projects for the class. I was tired of working with black and white and just thought it was about time for show some color. I was inspired by the technique I used for the Theatrical Ghost Story and went from there. Why the bright colors? Why not? I don't want it absolutely prefect and exactly like the reference. Where is the fun in that? Without my own creative input, what would have been the purpose of the project?

This is my interpretation and I and standing my it. I am proud of this piece and if I EVER want to go to Cancun and go scuba diving I WANT to see this!

Enjoy everyone~

Artist's Note
The photo of this washed out my colors that I worked hard to pop out, so I had to tweak up the saturation in Photoshop.

I like that you decided to go outside the usual color realm and put in some warm hues :D It makes the scene stand out more, like there's more light on it than just the traces of sunlight filtering in from the surface.

I don't know if a fish would take away from the piece, depending on it's placement. If it's interacting with the figure or with some of the sealife below, it probably wouldn't stand out as much, as opposed to it swimming above the scene.

Overall, I do think this is a good piece, and the details are done well! :]
