Hey there everyone, it sure has been a while. Thank you be sticking around and chilling with me here! I appreciate the feedback and all those llamas. Well, I think I have talked here before about being part of a lovely indie dev group known as Luminosity Mobile. Some of the coolest bunch of people I have ever worked with. We participated in the Cogniss Game Dev Contest back in the middle of July and the final deadline was the 28th of August. On the 4th it was announced that we were shortlisted to be the winners with one other dev. We were a shoe-in to win!
That's the thing though.
We did win.
However, we were not given the correct set of terms. What we found on their site was that winner would win prize, and keep their IP (Rights to the game for sales, marketing, use for portfolio, etc), while this Dev company gets dibs on selling the game through their own site. However, what we were told is that we get the prize but hand over the rights to the game and cannot say that we made this game at all. My game director found that they updated their terms...on facebook. WHO goes scrolling through months of posts to find the updated terms?? They didn't give a link to the updated terms on the context page. No emails updating the participants of the new terms? On their site but how is anyone supposed to know that?? This just felt very low handed and shady.
We can't get to keep the title/fact that we won and not taking the prize money so we can keep it. Claiming victory means to give it all up. For the lowball amount of prize money for all of the rights is not worth it at all. So we didn't accept being the winners of the contest for the case of being misinformed in the first place.
We are not sell outs. It absolutely sucks that we busted our asses and made a beautiful game and not really accept because them not ensuring their participants that they are up to date with their own terms. I much rather not be a sellout and instead keep my integrity.
